How To Apply Hair Oil

The Art of Applying Hair Oil

Hair oil is one of the most versatile products in any haircare routine — but its effectiveness depends entirely on how you use it. Applied correctly, it can transform dry, brittle, or lacklustre hair into something genuinely extraordinary. Applied incorrectly, it can leave hair looking greasy and weighed down.

This guide walks you through the correct technique for applying hair oil to both the scalp and the lengths, so you get the full benefit of every drop.

Before You Begin: Choosing Your Application Method

There are two primary ways to use hair oil, each with a different purpose:

  • Pre-wash treatment (oil masking) — Applied to dry hair before shampooing. This method allows the oil to deeply penetrate the hair shaft and scalp, providing intensive nourishment. The shampoo then removes any excess, leaving hair soft without residue.
  • Post-wash finishing oil — Applied to damp or dry hair after washing. This method seals in moisture, controls frizz, and adds shine. Use sparingly for a lightweight, polished finish.

Both methods are effective — the right choice depends on your hair type and what your hair needs most.

How to Apply Hair Oil to Your Scalp: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Section Your Hair

Divide your hair into four sections using clips or hair ties. This ensures even coverage and makes it easier to reach the scalp without missing any areas.

Step 2: Warm the Oil

Pour a small amount of oil into your palms — typically 3–5 drops for fine hair, up to 8–10 drops for thick or long hair. Rub your palms together to warm the oil slightly. Warm oil absorbs more readily and feels more comfortable on the scalp.

Step 3: Apply Directly to the Scalp

Using your fingertips (not your nails), apply the oil directly to the scalp along each parting. Work section by section, dotting the oil along the roots before moving to the next section.

Step 4: Massage in Circular Motions

This is the most important step. Using the pads of your fingertips, massage the oil into the scalp using firm, circular motions for at least 5 minutes. This stimulates blood circulation to the hair follicles, helps the oil absorb more effectively, and feels genuinely relaxing. Don't rush this step.

Step 5: Work Through the Lengths and Ends

Once the scalp is covered, use any remaining oil on your palms to smooth through the mid-lengths and ends of your hair — the areas most prone to dryness and damage. Avoid applying too much to the roots if you're using this as a finishing oil, as this can cause greasiness.

Step 6: Leave It to Work

For a pre-wash treatment, leave the oil on for a minimum of 30 minutes — or overnight for a deeper treatment. Cover with a warm towel or shower cap to help the oil penetrate. For a post-wash finishing oil, style as normal.

Step 7: Rinse or Style

If using as a pre-wash treatment, shampoo twice to ensure all excess oil is removed, then condition as normal. If using as a finishing oil, simply style as desired.

How Often Should You Oil Your Hair?

For most hair types, oiling 1–2 times per week as a pre-wash treatment delivers the best results. If you're using it as a daily finishing oil, a very small amount applied to the ends is sufficient. Over-oiling can lead to product build-up, so less is often more.
